WHEN I EXPORT TO 3DS FROM REVIT IT COMES IN WITH MATERIALS NOT SO RIGHT. BUT WHEN I IMPORT A REVIT FILE SAVE AS A .DWG IT COMES IN TO 3DS WITH GOOD MATERIALS, I THOUGHT ITS BETTER TO EXPORT A REVIT FILE DIRECTLY TO 3DS, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG THANKS

3DS does not take Revit's materials for some odd reason you have to re-assign the materials inside of 3DS. I have yet to find another method that allows for better transfer.

Have you tried the .fbx Export? Its avialable in 2009. We had a quick play with it and it appears to bring the materials across.

hi, it's because MAX don't recognize some materials, lights and RPC from Revit, in MAX you must change them...

We have been switching from ADT over to Revit. The Revit stuff is working great... now we are gearing up for rendering our Revit drawings in Max Design. I have exported our revit model using both FBX and DWG. We aren't planning on using our Revit materials in Max, we have libraries of materials from Viz, and will probably upgrade our materials to take full advantage of MR. In other words, all we need is Revit to have a place holder for the materials... So, here is my question. It seems the DWG link with Revit and Max Design works better than the FBX link. What is the advantage of the FBX link? Why would I use it over the DWG link?

FBX file format passes rendering information to 3ds Max, including lights, render appearances, sky settings, and material assignments for the 3D view dwg cant do the above

Thanks... since my scenes are setup for Max, most of that I don't need to bring over from Revit anyway (cameras, lights etc..). We model our sites using other programs. DWG does bring over material assignments (and in my opinion does a better job of it than FBX). I guess when we do some interior renderings, I might consider using FBX instead.
