Arghhhhh this is the nth time this has happened to me and i would like to know if anyone else is getting this.. I'm on Vista - my own fault I know, but i keep getting Revit files that can't be opened, edited, or moved to another folder, or even deleted unless i open task manager, open command dos prompt and then kill explorer and manually delete the fr%&ing file. Only with revit files and never had it before with XP...... Justin www.revitup.co.za

Hi JUSTIN, the Vista is 32 or 64 bits? i have Vista 64 and Revit 2008 and 2009 and i don't have any problem like that, do you check if those files and folders are "Read Only"? i can edit, copy and delete any file or folder from revit...

32bit Vista.. I have found on a few blog sites people with the same issue (though with other file types and not Revit) Basically it looks as though Vista can cause an instability when a file is moved, deleted, saved sometimes and it produces a corrupt file extensio or something... they talk about unrecognisable characters in the name and then the only way to delete these file is killing explorer and manually deleteing through the CMD dos box (which is what I have had to do) I have noticed it's only when I try to drag and drop a file to another directory or into the trash can. So maybe it's just the dragging feature that is unstable at times.. Don't we love VISTA Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

That is strange, I've been using Vista x64 Ultimate for nearly a year now and have never had that happen (touch wood). I assume someone has reported this issue? Is there a hot fix for it?

I, too have never had that problem. However, I have athought. As we all know, Vista is a pain in the ***. Particularly, with the over done "security" features, that seem to only kick in when installing valid software (you want to install? Are you sure? really sure? really, really sure?, etc). Anyway, to me this sounds like it could be that security issue that is giving you trouble. If it is only Revit files, Vista may not have recognized the .rvt extension as valid, for some reason. (This, by the way is a shot in the dark, but hope it either helps or spurs on another, better recommendation). That being said, it could also be an antivirus or firewall program, but unless it is fully integrated with Vista like Onecare or windows firewall, I can;t see you having a problem like you describe. I would recommend you go to control panel, and security settings. turn each one of your security features off and see if you can delete the files. You can also try turning off user account control, making sure you are an administrator, etc. Unfortunately, I am not that familiar with the ins and outs of Vista, so can;t tell you where there might be a place to "trust" a file extension, but if you try shutting all the stuff off I said, making sure you are an admin and it does work, you have narrowed down the suspects. If it doesn;t, I only made you go jump through a coupple hoops and apologize. Good luck, hth.

I have had this problem several times before, and yes it is a Vista problem. Try this free program,(fantastic app.) it works for me 99% of the time the other 1% was a pain in the a***.Install, Right click on file, select unlocker, select delete in drop down box and wait ,some times takes awhile.http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

OK had enough of this now lol it's only with Revit files I get this problem. Half the time I drag and drop a Revit file it freezes and then the only thing you can do with it afterwards is manually delete it via CMD prompt. Also many of the files I download from Revit City act in the same way... i.e they download but never open, can't delete or move to another directory... I HATE VISTA :o) Just can't fix this problem and no one else seems to have it and it's only since moving to Vista. Justin - just blowing off steam :o)

Justin, Believe me, you're not alone. I have exactly the same issue with Vista 32-bit. It seems only to occur with corrupted - or apparently corrupted -revit files. Revit hangs when trying to open these, can't delete them, can move them without explorer hanging. I was thinking initially it was something to do with thumbnail generation in Vista explorer but now think it's some thing a bit more fundamental. Would love to know if anyone else has managed to sus this one out. It only happens with Revit files and it is a complete pain. Hang in there Justin! Literally...

Yes yes yes.... running around the room with my tee shirt over my head football style... i've sussed this pain in Vista butt finally... The files were created by another user on a different machine and then copied to my machine, resulting in not being able to move them or delete them...... You can fix that by changing the permission settings for those files/folders. The Folder approach is easier, so right click on a Folder and select Properties. Click the Security tab, and then press the Advanced button. The "Advanced Security Settings for [folder name]" window will appear. Click on the Owner tab and click Edit. Replace the file's original owner with that of your account. That should allow you to delete those files At last... I can rest.. why is Vista trying to be so ''''k clever all the time! Justin
