If you open some of the baluster families included in the default libraries that come with revit you may get a better understanding. As for the angled reference planes these are for the cut of the baluster for ramps/stairs etc. You usually have to associate a void to these reference planes to cut the post. The horizontal reference planes define the height of the element.

is there any way to bend a panel in a corner instead of using a baluster?

Create a baluster that is a bent panel and set it as the corner post...?

Well, that worked, but it was a little difficult. I had to break the guardrail in the middle to get the middle panel to work correctly. So it is in 2 pieces. Thanks for your help.

Hi MHarris,
I have the same problem as you, and it appears you solved it. I can not get my paenl to run upstairs correctly and to breakright. I was wondering if you could post the baluster corner panel and the regular panel so I can analyze your solution. At corners the panel does not break.
Thanks.
I hope that is not too much too ask.

SURE THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM. I HOPE THIS IS THE RIGHT ONE. IT'S BEEN A WHILE. IF YOU ARE STILL HAVING PROBLEMS I MIGHT BE ABLE TO POST THE WHOLE RAILING. THAT WAY YOU CAN SEE HOW I PUT IT TOGETHER. SOME OF MY RAILINGS GOT SO COMPLICATED I HAD TO JUST DO THEM AS GENERIC COMPONENTS, AND NOT USE THE RAILING COMMAND. IT JUST SIMPLY COULD NOT DO IT. AT LEAST I COULDN'T GET IT TO DO IT, OR IT WAS JUST FASTER TO DO IT AS COMPONENTS.

Interesting. Thanks.
It appears as the right one.
Now did it creep up stairs correctly or did you not have any stairs?
If it isnt a hassle please post the whole rail.
Maybe I should just do as you did and use a generic component.
Was that 'in place' family?

NO THAT PANEL WASN'T ON A STAIR, IT WAS A GUARDRAIL CONDITION. FOR THE STAIRS, I USED THE RAILING COMMAND ONLY FOR THE ACTUAL HANDRAIL, BUT FOR THE GUARDRAIL PART, I MADE IT W/ A SERIES OF COMPONENTS THAT I MADE AND THEN INSERTED INTO THE DRAWING. HOWEVER, I EVENTUALLY DIDN'T USE THE HANDRAILS I MADE WITH THE RAILING COMMAND, BECAUSE I COULDN'T GET THEM TO WORK RIGHT. YOU KNOW BREAK WHERE I WANTED THEM TO, AT THE DIFFERENT HEIGHTS. WHAT I EVENTUALLY DID WAS IN PLAN VIEW, AND SECTION, ELEVATION, WHATEVER, I DREW THEM USING FILLED REGION. ANYWAY, ABOUT THE GUARDRAILS, I MADE THEM AS A GENERIC COMPONENT. I DIDN'T USE THE BALUSTER TEMPLATE, AND MADE THEM ADJUSTABLE. I THEN LOADED THEM INTO THE DRAWING, AND PLACED THEM WHERE I NEEDED THEM, AND ADJUSTED THEIR SIZE AS NEEDED. IT JUST WAS EASIER AND FASTER THAT WAY. HOPE THIS HELPED. IF YOU STILL NEED THE WHOLE RAILING SYSTEM FOR A LEVEL GUARDRAIL CONDITION, LET ME KNOW AND I'LL UP LOAD IT FOR YOU

Thanks alot.
I have spent enough time on it. What I will do is use the railing command for the regular pattern (w/o panel) and then use component to show the panel that are irregular.
I Almost got it to work, but it just wont end correctly and trucate the pattern, though it flexes right in the baluster family, angle and all. I am convinced it needs to be updated in a new release.
Thanks again for taking time to help.
Happy Reviting.
