Ok, I've been doing the Autocad thing for about 14 years and now we are beginning to implement Revit.  I've done a little over half the tutorial and have begun putting one of our smaller jobs into Revit.  What I don't seem to understand how to do (and maybe I'm searching incorrectly) is make mass that is made into a material.

For instance, I made a solid sweep for a corner board but it looks just like a wire frame element on the model.  You can see the siding through the sweep.  Is there a way to make the sweep a material or am I going about this the wrong way.

sorry for the noob question, but our professional trainning doesn't start for another 2 weeks and I'm trying to get a head start so I know what quesitions to ask.

Massing is designed to be used as a design guideline tool. If you want to model a sweep object you can use Hosted Sweeps, Component families, or In-Place Families. Search for these items in the help file and it will give you information on how to create each type of object.

ok, I made an inplace "corner board" - however, I'm not sure which "Family Category" to put it in or what the consequences of one category to the other is.  Furthermore I keep reading about the "Family Editor" - I know it's probably right in front of my face but I can'f find it where the "help" menu tells me to.  I want to make the component part of a Family but I just can't figure it out.

Hi, sorry for my question, but, are you in "Wireframe or Shade mode"? because when you say "You can see the siding through the sweep.".... if you made a "Sweep" you have to put the right family, you create that sweep to put in what? wall? if it's that so the "family category" is Wall, if you want to put a sweep in a roof so the "family category" is "Roof" and so one...

You can access the "Family Editor" by going to File-->New-->Family and opening a family template. You can choose one of the default templates depending on what you are going to model or use Generic and change the family category to what you need.

Thanks for the info.  I tried making a "corner trim" with the "generic family" but I must be doing something wrong, because when I insert it, it comes in 200' +/- away.

I guess the question I should be asking so I can begin focusing my efforts is if I'm going to have corner trim that is the same all around my building, and I want it to all be updatable it I update just one piece, what's the best method?

When you begin a new Generic Family you should see two dashed lines. Those are Reference Planes and they represent the origin of the family. When you draw solid geometry you can use these planes or define your own as the insertion point of the family. To define another plane as origin you can right-click the plane and go to properties. There is a check box that says "Defines Origin". When you checkmark the box it changes the origin plane to that plane. You can do this for all three axis.

i think you should make a sketch.  it sounds like you might be wanting a wall based family or a sweep or a profile and not a generic model family
