We've just finished up our first big project in revit, and naturally my bosses are really impressed by the swanky-looking 3D model we've created.  we've shown them some 3D views, and their response was, "wow, wouldn't it be great if we could get a really nice rendering of this to use in our presentations?"  doing this in-house isn't really an option right now, since we've just started using revit and know next to nothing about accurender, and no one else in the office uses any rendering programs.  what we've done for renderings in the past (for 2D autocad projects) is to send our drawings to a third-party rendering outfit.  so, my question is this: if we export our 3D model from revit to a 3Dmax format, will the renderers be able to use it to create a really stellar 3D rendering?  is it reasonable for us to ask them to give us a discount for already providing a 3D model (since they would usually have to create one), or is there a lot of work involved in getting a revit model ready for rendering in max?  Basically, what are the known issues in exporting models from revit to 3Dmax?

if you are using 08 or older and export to dwg and pass it off to a 3ds Max user they should be able to produce some top shelf in minimal time.

If you upgrade to 2009 with mental ray you can assign materials and lighting in Revit. Since 3ds Max uses MR also you can export to FBX format now and produce design visualization in no time at all. I would work out something with your design viz guys to give you an hourly rate for Renders+Architecture and a rate for just renders.
