I'm having trouble creating a hipped I-beam. I used a reference plane that was aligned in plan to the hip ridge but was unable to snap one end to the underside of the roof geometry in order to locate the beam precisely. In other words, how do you draw a structural member in plan then align it to a specific point in the z direction?

When you draw the structural beam in section/elevation it will create another reference plane that it will associate its level to.
To lock to the roof, lock this reference plane to the underside of the roof.
