I have been looking and looking for the answer and have been unsuccessful thus far. Is there a way to change the default view reference to a custom one? I am using Revit Architecture 2008.

Yes there is a method to change the default view referance. Go to the Settings drop down menu in Revit, and select "Veiw Templates". Either pick one from the list, or make your own. this then will become the default view template. you could save this setting to a RVT template file, then any new drawings would already have the view set up.
