This is not the first time I have gotten this message but usually I am trying to get something difficult to work. However, this is the first time that I was not using the program and it has crashed. Is this a bug in 2009 or something I am doing wrong? As far as I know, the program was idle and waiting for me as I was checking my e-mail. Anyone else have this problem?

Fatal error from switching applications could only really be caused by a graphics failure when attempting to regenerate the view. Ensure you graphics card drivers are up to date. If you still experience random crashes you may have to resort to turning off Open GL acceleration.

I am having the same problem. 2009 has crashed maybe a dozen times since I upgraded. After a number of crashes I changed to Open GL Acceleration which made not apparent difference. I completely removed 2009 and reinstalled the software. Again it crashes at least twice a day whether the Open GL Acceleration is on or not. I have also noticed in 2009 that zooming in and out of a plan view (for instance) the zoom is jumpy but navigating in the 3d view (spinning the model) is smooth. 2008 was never jumpy in either instance. The Facts: 1. I am running files that are consistantly +/- 24 megs. 2. I often run with at least two projects open at a time. 3. I run it on a 6 month old Dell Laptop, 200 gig hardrive (half full), top of the line "grapics card", dual core processor, and 4 gig of memory. It is a very fast machine. 4. While zooming in and out the computer showed a max of 45% of the CPU capacity being used. 5. Have run 2008 as described above for +6 month without the first crash. 6. Installed 2009 and was crashing within the first day ot two. I am starting to wonder if 2009 is more of a computer hog. Any comments would be great. Thanks, Brent

Graphics are marginally slower in 2009 and are supposed to be addressed in a later build. The instability should be happening. Do you have the latest drivers for you video card? Is it nvidia? If so please force vertical sync Off and force extention limit On for Revit.exe in your graphics settings. Also, one issue with owning a dell is they graphics drivers are not updated as often at they should be...

I contacted support through my reseller and I recieved this response: Make sure Windows operating system is up to date with all critical and recommended updates. If necessary, he can go to the Control Panel of Windows, ADD/Remove programs, pick Revit 2009 and use the Fix/Repair Feature. Make sure his Anti Virus software is turned off during installation of all software and during the Fix/Repair. Worst case scenario, Reinstall Revit using this same procedure: … go to the Control Panel of Windows, ADD/Remove programs, pick Revit 2009 and use the Reinstall Feature. Make sure his Anti Virus software is turned off during installation of all software and during the Reinstall. He will need his installation DVD for both of these tasks."
After speaking with my IT people here and telling them my problem they both nodded thier heas at the "turning off the antivirus software" during install. I may sound like an idiot but why do you have to turn off the antivirus, does it hinder the communication with Revit? Hopefully this works and I have no more issues otherwise I will be waiting for the update before using it. Kind of a bummer to as I was looking forward to the new render engine! Thanks for your repsonses.

Well, now it has just gotten worse. I can't even open files as it just crashes before it can even open the file. I am supremely frustrated right now so I am just going to go back to 2008 until this problem gets fixed with an update. I have updated everything and as far as I know there is no update for the graphics card I am running. I shut donw the antivirus for reinstallation and it just got worse. I am supremely disappointed as I was looking forward to using the mental ray rendering but I guess now will have to wait. Any additional help / support would be appreciated. -Ken

I think this error is for OUT of MEMORY, not for antivirus active, i had the same problem before, i have a dual-core with 3gb Ram and some times this error occurs, then i install SMP SEESAW and isolate Revit in Core 1 and the others programs to Core 2, until now the error disapear, and i have Norton 360 active... so...

Sounds like you are having hardware issues, this is not a bug in the system. Just keep in mind that Revit does require some good hardware but my employees are running 2009 worry free on Centrino laptops with Geforce graphics cards. 14 active 2009 projects and no problems. My advice is to contact your IT guy, he should be able to help.

I never turn off the anti-virus software when I install applications, but it does have the potential to block certain tasks from happening during the installation, such as accessing/updating system files... The only thing else I would suggest would be to: Delete the C:\Program Files\Revit Architecture 2009 folder and all its contents, Use a project such as Registry Cleaner to remove all registry entries for RAC2009. Reboot. Then attempt a clean install. If you still have issues then next step would be use System Restore to roll back you PC to before you installed RAC09 and try again from there. HTH.
