I have some Custom materials that I want to use in the Render Appearance Library but I'm not sure how to load them or save them so that they show up in the Render Appearance Library. Any help would be great! Thanks. I'm using RAC 2009- Dom

If you want to add a new material I believe the best way would be to go to Settings >>> Materials. Under Render Appearance, chose Replace and pick a material from the premade materials that comes close to the material you intend to make. From there you can change the image file to use the image you wish, then go from there assigning bump maps, reflectivity, etc. I dunno if this helps, but this is how I have been going about making custom materials so far...

After you have created the materials, you will still need to go into each family and assign the newly created material to it. I'm thinking if nothing is rendering (default materials) then the materials arent assigned to the families yet.

I'm trying to add new custom materials to the Rendering Appearance Library. I tried repathing the Render Appearance Path to the folder with my custom materials and still nothing showed up. The materials are assigned to the families because I went back and double checked... I think it's because the image file and the Rendering Appearance don't match up?? I guess... and that I need to get my custom materials into the Render Appearance Library. Thanks for the help so far... I know I've got to be close.

My model was just being buggy but I fixed it. First I created my custom png file, then I duplicated the Default material in the existing materials in Revit and gave it a new name, after that I changed Color: to Image file: and then browsed and found my png file that I created, I adjusted it to how I wanted it to look and then hit apply. I closed out of the materials dialogue box and went to settings/options/Rendering tab and made sure that the additional render appearance paths had my folder with my new materials and I just hit ok. I believe this loaded it into my project. I did this before and after I created my new material in Revit just to make sure that it was there before... so I'm not sure if it truly reloaded it or if it was already there. HTH Dom

Please note currently the "Asset Library" for Mental Ray is read only and you cannot add to materials to this to use as a base for making Revit Materials. You can only use the existing materials as a basis in this version.

Does this mean I cannot create a new render appearance in the appearance library? I want to create a new render appearance for a metal roof profile. i.e - Material - Colorbond roof - Render appearance - image I have saved. Can I do this without over riding any of the existing materials? HELP PLEASE..

I think I'm really going to have a put a post on blog about this as a lot of people are having issues getting their head around the process. Lets put it into a tree diagram: Mental Ray Asset Library (read only) - presetup with Revit (stored in your C Drive Library) | V Revit Material Library (fully customiseable) - Accessed by Settings-->Materials-->Rendering tab (stored in a project only) We can't currently add anything to the top level. Basically there is enough variety of materials to select one of the Asset Library materials and simply manipulate it to achieve what you are after. You can achieve pretty much anything. The Generic option gives you access to nearly all customisation. So you can certainly create what you are after and I've actually already setup colobond materials for all different sheeting profiles. HTH.

I'm having trouble using a custom jpg-image in a material. Jusing the generic material as a base, the preview goes black when updating. The strange thing is that when replacing the image with others it shows fine. I've tried to adjust the scale and just about everything else I can think of, with no luck. Also tried to save as png and bmp from Photoshop to see if it had something to do with the jpg-format. Any suggestions?

Hey, is the only way to get a custom surface pattern on a material by using an image to create the pattern? I want a tiled pattern where each tile is 2390mm long and 590mm high. In RAC2008 it was easy to create this pattern, but I'm having trouble doing it in RAC2009. Could someone please tell me how to do this? Im using RAC2009.
