I have to create wall niches for hanging artwork on a wall. The niches are 5" depth into the wall, 1'-8" off the floor, and 5'-4" tall. Does anyone have any ideas on how to create this?

TRY A VOID. EITHER FROM AN INPLACE FAMILY OR MAKE A FAMI,LY OF THEM THAT WOULD BE PARAMETRIC.

As Bim man suggested,
Best bet would be to create a new Generic Model wall based family, and create a parametric void that has been set to cut the wall, then load into your project and place as needed...
Also depends on how many there are on what would be the best method.

Hi
I didn't expect such type of answer from Mr. Spot(sorry)
The best way is creat a profile in "Profile-Reveal" family & load in ur project.
Then Modelling---Hostsweep-----Wall Reveal, select the wall.
It will cut the whole wall from on end to the other. Select the reveal & drag(ends of reveal) to the required dimension.
Regards
Pavan

Pavan,
your way is way too complicated, there are many ways to skin a cat, but I think Mr. Spot is much quicker and simple...

Pavan,
Sure my method isn't the be all and end all of the way to go about it...
Didn't think of doing it your way, but i think i'd still prefer to do it they way i suggested. Less fiddly and easier to change.
For instance say you have a 400wx600hx100d niche and it changes to be 800h at a later stage. With your method you would need to invidually edit all the reveals and drag all the end points to the appropriate places. Mine, you'd just edit the family type parameters and all are updated...
All down to personal preference really...
Cheers.

I used the method Mr.Spot suggested to create wall niches and it works perfectly. My problem is that I'm working on the renovation of a XVIIth century building  converted into a hotel) and we have added doors to the existent wall niches, so that we can use this spaces as electrical/sanitary control rooms, therefore we now need to attach some elements/equipments to the part of the wall that remains inside the niche, but when I create a Generic Model wall based family (with a void for the equipment and the equipment inserted in the void) and try to insert the family on the wall, it can only be placed on the outside part of the wall; and if I try to do a mirror with the control arrow of the family, it says it can't be done because the object is not cutting anything. Does anyone have any ideas on how to create this? Please see attached drawings for a better understanding.

Use the "Create In-Place" and choose "Wall" to the category, create the void like you want then use the "Cut Geometry" tool before you finish the void family...

If you are doing the niche in the project, you do as Ty says. In the family though, create the void extrusion and finish it. Then from the modify menu select cut, select the void, then the host.
