I am having problems saving typical details to a library and are they suposed to be saved as a view in order to use them on different projects.

If they are "drafting views" use "save to Library / save views" if it is a model based detail you will need to freeze it using the freeze drawing extension from this link. http://www.extensions4revit.com/

I have heard of this before, has anyone tried it or had any luck using it in Revit Architecture 2008?

I have used several of the extensions and they work great. With the "freeze drawing" you can make a 2D drafting view of a 3D section and make modificatons as needed or export to a typical library.
