I am working on a renovation of an existing landmarked building. We are tyring to replace the existing windows with a new version of the exact same window. I am trying to set up my revit file to have my existing windows demolished in a demo phase and then the new windows to be created in the new construction phase.
My problem is that in spite of the fact that the first window is demolished in one phase and the new window is created in the next phase, Revit will not allow the new window to inhabit the same space as the demolished window. Its as if Revit is still identifying the location as being owned by the demolished window.
Has anybody encountered this problem?
In a related problem, my windows are set in a multi faceted stone wall. I don't want to demolish the stone work around the window in Revit. I simply want to remove the wood sash. How do i create a window system that separates the rough opening from the sash? In other words, how can I demo the window and leave the rough opening undisturbed?

Hi folks, This is my first post here, but ive been lurking for some time as i got used to the software. A great resource!many thanks. I am having the same problem with replacement windows and was wondering if anyone can help. I'm trying to insert a replacement window in the same location as a window that was demolished in a previous phase. It seems i cant do this because the window infill is in the way. Is this possible? Cheers Keith ww.cityarchitectural.co.uk

I created a family component with just the cut out. Placed it in existing, then demo in new construction. You should be then able to place in a new window in new construction.

Revit 2016 and still the same problem...
And what is weird is that it happens just sometimes. Sometimes you're able to put another window on the same place, and sometimes not.
I finally manage to align the two different windows in two different phases, but there is just no logic in that.
The possibility of separating the cut opening and the filling will work, but it means that you model the building with already that purpose of changing after (what is not necessarilly always your first intention). And you'll also have to recreate all window families.
If someone has some new experiences about this problem, I'll be happy to know about it! Thank you.

It may be the family origin is the problem. I can't re-create your problem - mine always works even when off in alignment but I am r-inserting the same window family.

It’s happening to me all the time. I usually copy to clipboard all the windows together in the existing phase, demo them and then paste them back in the new construction phase aligned to the current view. The pasted windows never remove infill wall, so I have windows and infill walls occupying the same space - pita. So what I do is, with the windows still selected after pasting, I change the sill height a few inches and then back to the original. It fixes the issue for me pretty well. If the windows have different sill heights, I paste them in the elevation view aligned to selected levels and then move the windows up or down a few inches and back to the original location. Works every time.
Inserting the windows one by one seems to work ok, the problem is only when c/p. Even with the hassle of temporarily moving the windows, c/p is still much faster than inserting one by one.
Why the new window is not removing the infill wall the way it should? I have no clue.

I agree with PijPivo that this normally works, but I encountered another problem with not cutting the infill: it happened with no obvious reason when aligning the window next to it. The filling just appeared, no clue. When reassigned a new host and aligned, the filling disapeared.
Sometimes I get a message that there is a phase problem with the filling or that the window cannot cut the wall.
Like I said I finally managed to replace all my windows but it was quite a challenge. And this happens only to some windows, not all, not all the time.
The origin is the same for both families.

This sounds like an origin problem. The infill is a seperate wall from the existing wall. Revit must be having a problem with what wall is hosting the window. I saw some posts on AUGI that suggested joining the existing wall with the infill then placing the window. Since mine always seems to work, maybe you can check that out pijpiwo. If that works then maybe you can goback to Autodesk with this and it might leadt to a fix.

Thanks for the suggestion WW, but joining didn't help. Not a big deal though, just a few more clicks - I used to that.

I got it to work! I copied from my demo elevation view and "pasted in same place" into my proposed elevation view as mentioned above. then i added a rectangular wall opening to get the infill to be "demo'd". Hope this helps!
