I miss understood your post, my bad.  This would be an interesting trick if someone knows how to do it.

^^^Nope! the desire is to have 1 wall with structural layers & architectural layers. Then in structural views, the wall would only show the structural layer.

This is why I'm perplexed as to why when you create walls, it asks you the purpose of the wall layer. Why does Revit want that specified if you can't use it to control visibility or look different in structural vs architetural views?

For wall layer clean up...  From the help menu, Applying a Function to a Layer of a Compound Structrue.

^^^ I wish I knew! Like I was saying in an earlier post - I wish they could just associate that data with the view type visibilty to make it hide the appropriate wall layers.

Wrapping to me is brick wrapping around an opening

this is to get the layers to join each other, priorty 1 joins with priorty 1 and priorty 2 joins to priority 2 and so on.

then you have the core layers, that have the same priority features (1 to 1 and 2 to 2) but they take priorty over the layers not inside the core boundry.  (I hope that makes sense)

Look at the two pictures close and find the two core boundry lines and see what is in between the core on each pic.

Basicly it is to prevent brick from cleaning up with Sheathing and air space does not clean up with insulation.  or so insulation will pass thru the air space to the exterior wall to meet the sheathing.  (I hope I am not confussing you, I am having a hard time typing it out)

One way to do this without breaking up walls is to start off by filter your walls by "structural usage". Then make sure only the part of the wall you want to display is set to structure in your wall assembly.

Then go to "Visibility / Graphics", tick "cut line styles" and click edit in the "Override Host Layers" section to the bottom right. Modify the line weights so that structure has the line weight you want and all the rest are; line - weight 1, color - white, pattern - dot loose.

The finishes, substrates, etc are still drawn but are white, so they won't print. If you have too many white dots on your drawing you can turn off "walls">"common edges".

^^^thanks Chester - I had never used "override host layers" before - very useful! Also I found a linestyle called "phantom" (don't know where it came from) but it made the appropriate line completely dissappear. I'll have to see how it prints.

Even though this is a work around, it completely solved my issue.

Now I would like to do this: Have structural 3d views which accomplish the same thing - show only structural members and wall layers.

My recipe:

1. select all your host objects (walls, floors, roofs)
2. Create Parts (Modify Ribbon / Create Tab)
3. set your View's "Parts Visibility" parameter to "Show Parts"
4. on Visibility/Graphics step on the Filter tab and add a filter for "Parts" category's "Construction" parameter (it can be Core or Finish)
5. optional 1: save the properties of the View to a template
6. optional 2: if you do not want to see the lines between the parts, select them all, and click "Merge Parts" on the contextual (green) secion of you Modify Ribbon

In some cases, you have to modify the geometry of your Parts. For this, just turn on Shape Handles Visibility at their Properties...

Why not just use the Revit function called copy monitor where you can use a different wall type in the structural model yet link it to the architectural wall?

With Copy/Monitor in may cases difficult, to handle the offset between the original and the "core only" wall. For a single plan view of section it is unnecessary to build up and handle an other model as a link .
