" I see words like "architecture" and "building", etc. Not words like "scraping dirt" or "grading" or "landscaping". If you're trying to use a program for functions other than what it designed for, then you MUST find other resources to get your job done. Geez... adapt and overcome, my man. If people focused more on the solution rather than the problem, more progress would get done. btw. You don't have to purchase any other software. Autodesk offers free trial downloads. Figure that one out. " Once again, if you think that a site is not part of an architectural design project than you are obviously just a cad monkey and know absolutely nothing about architecture. Which is fine. Just a point of clarification. Revit has a site feature -in fact a very elaborate one (did you not notice that one of the 9 tabs is called "massing and site" but it is simply lacking a key feature (oh and it does include the word "grading", along with words like toposurface, buliding pad, parking component, site component property line, contours etc).. Did you help me figure out this problem? No, so you want to put your two cents which was REALLY helpful. Thanks. No we can download a 30 day trial when we pay $5500 plus $1000 a year for subscription. Yeah thats exactly what I'm going to do thanks for the help now I have it all figured out. Yeah because our business will only last another 30 days.

it would be very entertaining to take alot of these post from Revitcity and AGUI and put a series of short plays followed by questions and anwsers at the next Autodesk University. i think it really might help Autodesk direct its focus on user concerns more than submiitting a whislist. Any screen writers out there using Revit?

Anyone know whether Revit 2012 has sorted this issue out?

Just to add fuel to the fire. You could always print your topo in color.

How would you only print the topo in color? I just remembered that you can control the poche of a topo region in section. So why can you not do it in plan haha??!!

I often print the first sheet in color, which includes some 3D views in color.

Seconded to dkobran. This is absurd. The site tools have gotten really good IMO (I can import from Google earth adn do view studies in a couple hours - incredible!) but with so many fundamentals still lacking. There is so much that makes Revit feel like it's still in Beta. And to the people who get indignant that site is not architecture - you're kidding yourself. The idea that topography is "less architecture" than worksets, shared parameter files and reference planes and labels is absurd. The hoops we jump through to make simple things like note blocks and topography work show that someone with fresh eyes needs to look at what's necessary in the next update. Get bac to basics autodesk.
Workflow through other $5000 programs should not be the solution for basic things I could do with a pencil in 10 minutes.
FIX IT!

Guys... I'm totally on the side of dKobran.
I don't know what function do you have in the sector, but a REAL architect need to deal with the surrounding, expecially if he has to prepare the plans and th document for the permissions to build. I'm constatlly faceing this problem of the arcering of the toposurfaces and I think it's one of the most stupid things of this program... and I said one of the most , not the most. The concurrency don't have this kind of issues. But it's Autoesk we are talking about: First the money and then... that's it. First the money.
Following your advices someone should buy evry time at least three programs of $5000 each ... to be forced to buy them after 3 years, becuse Autodesk has introduced with revit the ultimate trick: NO DOWNSAVE!!!
Really great as support guys... I've already checked the huge differences with Archicad, and thta'going to be my next drawing program.

Revit 2014/15: I know this is an old thread but I've been trying to figure this out for awhile. The phase of the topography must be set to 'new construction' assuming that is a visible phase on your view (check that in your properties window). If the topo is set to the existing phase and the view is set to new construction or completed, it will not show the seperate materials for the topo and subregion.

If you model the element with a surface pattern of say grass, it will appear in all views including 3D with a grass pattern or wetland or whatever. This isn't desirable to show a client. In your plan view use transparent regions to place hatch patterns over toposurface areas. You are able to asign a material to toposurface but not a pattern.
I should ammend that surface patterns should only be used to show illustrative textures.
