AHHHHHHH! What amI doing wrong!! I select 'create' I select Roof as the family I name it. I select void form and then void sweep. I sketch the path on the workplane which is the top of the wall plate (in this case level 1) I sketch the profile using the section view (refer attached sketch). When I click finished sweep I ge this error message: "Some Void Forms of this family do not cut anything and will be deleted. To make a Void Form cut something else use the Cut Geometry tool." What am I donig wrong? I presume there are two sweep cuts in the shape of a triangles I need to create. cadjockey

Modelling-->Create-->Roof, Name it...

Create your void.

Use cut geometry tool, select void then select the element you want it to cut. It now cuts.

Finish Family.

Read this answer carryfuly. Before finish void family you must cut geometry with that void after that
finish family.

Hi xane, Thanks for your help however, my first challenge is creating the void. In my last post I describe the steps I am taking to create the void and I come unstuck when I try to finish the sweep void which I can then use with the cut geometry tool. Given the error messageI receive I read this as saying the roof I am trying to alter using the sweep cut profile I tried to make is not a sold geometry. That doesn't make sense. I know it is a simple thing I am not doing. Because it is simple I am not seeing it. cadjockey.

Cadjockey, Not sure i can explain it any more detailed without creating a tutorial or video... I don't have a copy of revit 7 handy so can't re-model in that version... There is no need to have the roof sketches overlap as our previously outlined. If your still having trouble i'll right you a tutorial this afternoon. server is being installed so i'll have some free time.

Hi Mr Spot, I appreciate your time and patience. On the issue of tutorials. Other than augi, caddigest and this site are there any other sites that offer quality tutorials online? I am prepared to pay a subscription to a site that has decent tutorials. cadjockey

Hi Mr Spot. OK I found the simple step I was missing. I need to use the cut geometry tool to cut the object before I click Finish Family when creating the void. I did this and the roof was cut. However, why would I receive the error message? cadjockey

Because a void cannot exist on its own in a family. The reason for this as you wouldn't be able to hover over something to reselect the family after finishing editing it as there is no solid geometry to pick. IF you tell it to cut something before finishing it, revit then has a reference for reselecting it, by hovering over the cut element edge.

Hi Mr Spot, Are we saying that the cut geometry tool can only be used when a sketch is open and being edited? How is the void sweep that was created to this particular roof used in another instance within the project? cadjockey

I'm looking for a color chart or something that will show what things actually look like when you print. Any help?

Not when your in the actual sketch, when you finished the sketch but before you finished the family..

you can add additional voids in this family to then cut other roofs etc...

You should calibrate your printer, look manual.
That is not for this thread.
