This way seems to work pretty well for me, just moved the large mass into a workset that is off by default.

I'm going to try the swept blend way next project and see how i like it

Thanks dgcad, this has been bothering me since about my 3rd day in Revit, the video link halped as I hadn't used that part of the program yet. Hopefully in the future Revit will make the tapering tools usable in sloped roofs.

I struggled with this a bit:  I got the sub-elements thing to create the roof shown as a single element (1 and 2 attached).  May look weird in section but at least its possible.

  1. Create a regular old roof with no slope arrows or edges with "defines slope" active.
  2. Draw a bunch of reference lines, the more the better, in plan and section for your desired slopes and at every conceivable intersectionof the roof edges, ridges, and valleys. Throw in a bunch of orthographic RP's too at each point.  You can delete them later. (3 attached).
  3. Click on your roof and then "Modify Sub Elements" - Add a point at every intersection of your reference planes and/or roof edges (4 attached).
  4. Go to your sections (front and side), click on each point (don't click-drag - no accuracy there) and use the blue arrows that appear to move the point up or down until it intersects the appropriate ref plane - takes some visualizing but not too bad (5 attached)

Drawbacks:

  1. You have to be accurate as heck with your ref planes.  Off by 1/256" and you'll end up with an unwanted valley or ridge line - suppose you could lineweight it away later.
  2. You have to be good at roof geometry to sketch everything out with RP's in the first place.  For example, you need to know that two roofs with the same but perpendicular slopes will create a 45° line where they come together.

Anyway, hope this helps someone.

One way to do it might be to model a floor slab and add points or split lines then modify sub-elements.

Polar,

Cool, that's what I was looking at too!  How did you get your slopes to be exatly 1/4:12?  Did you do it programatically or by just doing the math/sketching yourself?

Thanks.
