thanks lunchtrayrider for looking into it - unfortnunatelly messing with catalyst didn't do much. I'm about to throw in an nVidial card into the mix just for sh.ts and giggles and see what happens.. I'll post my feelings about it in a near future..

update: found a basic nVidia card - GeForce 8300 gs, in one of our computers, plugged it into my machine and it WORKED! I can tell it's slower than all the newer and beefier ATI cards I tried but the thing works - things don't vanish randomly from the PDF's and prints and also so far no crashes and sh.t like "could not draw contents of this window therefore it will be closed".. conclusion: someone (either Autodesk or ATI) has to fix their stuff.. the program or the drivers but before then no DirectX in Revit for ATI cards. (or so it seems for my 4 computers)..

since you've solved your problem ~ i'll just add this for others that may come across the problem of missing lines on a plot... for us, it's our poor, ancient, plotter (after all, it's 5 years old now!!) we've had to switch to "in computer" memory instead of "in printer" i'm getting stupid "error drawing window" messages (structure 2010) and the only autodesk suggestion is to disable the graphics acceleration. it's already disabled. so i guess i need to look into this graphics driver stuff. blah. a true love-hate with computers here.
