We have run a number of renders on our dual core 4Gig machine with a high end card. We have one running now set to best-artificial and sun that has been going for 4 and 1/2 days and has been on 50% for more than 24hours. The processor appears still to be running so we are tempted to leave it as an experiment. Good posts on this thread. We have also determined a medium editted setting is best. We have doctored our lights to reduce the number of light sources and reduced reflective surfaces to reduce the speckles that appear at this detail level.

MetalRay in Revit is limited to 4 cores... There are a number of workarounds that have already been suggested but currently you cannot adjust a setting and have revit take advantage of all your hardware. I'd imagine Autodesk is deliberately limiting the implementation of Mental Ray into revit so as not to cripple their Max Design sales as I'd imagine that a lot of Architectural companies have both software packages. I can understand this, but there are still parts that need to be further implemented. Lets hope they just don't get ignored for 5 releases as is sometimes the case for other newly implemented tools in Revit...

here here The Autodesk guy at RTC didn’t really elaborate if Autodesk are going to implement more features into Revit Mental Ray which was disappointing so I’m guessing that Autodesk know they have a strong hold over the Vis industry. I suppose this keeps visualisation guys employed as producing good quality visuals is a specific talent outside a designer’s skill base. If Autodesk want more and more people to use illegal software then they are going about it in the right way as not every firm will fork out 5-6k for Max/Maya. By the way, we have Licensed 3dMax. wwwwooooooowwwwww AUTODESK!!!!

I have never had a rendering take over 3 hours on my simple laptop, exterior or interior (with artificial lights on) and LOADED with RPC's. A typical file size of my rendered projects are around the 20 KB range. To be honest, my previous renderings would take over 6 hours until I discovered a neat little trick. If you change your 3D view size to the size you are going to print your 3D view (or even smaller), this will save considerable rendering time. Eg. before adjusting the 3D view size, some of my sizes were 60"x90", not feasible for in-house design studies that would only be printed on an 11x17. I have also found that changing the setting to High, a 5"x5" image size at 600 dpi will still take under an hour or so to render and when printed on an 11x17, you will find is still a very acceptable rendering. Using the same settings, a 10"x10" image size would of course take 4x longer. Disclaimer: I know not of a way to change the image size when attemping to rendering an elevation (as you have to render from an oriented 3D view which seems to not let you change the image size parameter). Would show you guys the quality of renderings but company policy prevents that of course. Hope this helps. Computer specs: Laptop, Core Duo @ 1.6 GHz each, 1 GB RAM, RAC 2009 I'm upgrading to a quad core @ 2.5 ghz each with 3GB RAM desktop later this week to utilize the mental ray engine buckets. Futhermore, when rendering times are compared with 3DS max after exporting the revit model as an fbx) RAC 2009 will still render 5x faster.

Hi there We had the same problems at varsity. I once had a bathroom scene, wood floor, plaster walls, a chandalier and about 6 downlights... it took 2 days to render...and I had a deadline looming. We found that if you switch off the sun, set you reso;ution to 300dpi, and if its a simple pic, then 250dpi is fine, and don't radiate, then renders go quicker. Yes you do need a minimum of 2G. Half my problem was that I had only 1G. As soon as it was increased, my renders went quicker. Also remember, if you open a new file and copy only the room you need to render, its quicker because revit calculates all of the lights in the whole project. That saved us plenty time before deadlines. And yes, we also used the 2 region render. Just splice them together in corel and its brilliant. MINIMUM 2 GIG RAM, 2GHZ PROCESSOR

I think Blackhawk is right about the size. I am trying to render an elevation view of a large building. When the scale was set to 1/8" and the render settings were for printer, high, 300 dpi and it took an hour to get to 50% before it locked up on me. Later I set the scale to 1" = 20' with render settings for printer, high, 150 dpi and it rendered in half an hour. I then set the scale to 1" = 400' (just to see what would happen) and render settings for printer, high, 600 dpi and it only a few minutes to render however the quality at that scale looked bad. You can change the scale after you save the render to the project as I went to place a few of the renderings I did do on a sheet and had to change the scale to get them to fit on the sheet. Using RA2009. My 2 cents.
