If you want to globally turn something off you can workset the project that you are linking from and place all of the unwanted stuff (levels and grids, etc) onto thier own workset(s) and choose to not load that workset. This would take care of your "type parameter." As for "instance" you wuld have to deal with view templates. Nick

So, I would have to tell the structural guy to separate all his annotations into a different workset within his model? I don't know if he wants to do extra work Is there any way I can created worksets within his linked model? Would I have to attach it? If so, (since I have never attached anything) what kind of challenges will that then present?

You don't need them to setup worksets. View templates ... You can over-ride all the VG settings for linked rvt files. The file does have to be linked first before you can set up a template.

JFlynn, I like your thinking with the Type/Instance control of view visibilities! But unfortunately View Templates is going to be your best course of action. Its actually important that you can see the datums in some views to ensure they in fact co-ordinated.

I'm having a similar (same?) problem. Using Revit Structure, I've started a project from a template and linked-in the architect's file, copy/monitored their grids and levels etc. My issue is they have their own grid head family and we have ours. I want to continue to monitor theirs for changes, but I don't want to see double grid heads. I have not found a way to control the visibility of an annotation entity in the linked file by any other means except to open their file (the one I have linked) and edit their grid head family to turn off it's visibility, reload it into project, save the file, and re-open my project file. That solves my grid head visibility problem, but I think it will negatively impact my grid monitoring in the future. What am I missing?

You can either workset their project, put all of the levels and grids on shared levels and grids and then not load that workset. This woud make levels and grids not visable in any view. Which wont work for you from the sounds of it. If you want to see them in some views and not others then you can go into visibility graphics for each view, go to revit links, sleect that link and change it from host view to custom. Then you need to go into the custom settings and turn on/ off the categories in that lin. These changes will not affect what you have in your model (turn off str grids and leave yours on). The same is true in the opposite direction that general changes to VV will no longer effect the link. If you are looking to show thier grids exactly out oftheir model with your heads then I think you would have to actually change the heads in their model. You could create your grid head with the exact same name as theirs and then load that in every time you get a new file. We create a "swap" folder for some similar instances. HTH Nick

You can control visibility of linked file categories just like you do with your file categories. There are two ways: - Through VG in the view - VG / Revit Links click on the "by host view" in the display settings - now check custom and goto the V G categories of your linked model and turn on/off as you want. That includes their levels/grids.
- You can tab through on individual linked file entities and use the hide in view option.

In structural model, create a new workset (we will call it Workset-0). While creating it, set teh default visibility "off" (remove the checkmark). All items you do not want to show in main model should now go to this Workset-0. Now whenever you link this model into any othe rmodel, Workset-0 won't show up.

When Structural copy/monitors the walls & levels/grids, then sets up the columns and send the file back to Arch... when Arch links the Struct. model all the elements that were established in Arch. are back in the Arch. model, correct? If that is so, then the Arch. will have to V/G the linked walls, levels and grids? Is this how it is supposed to work with linked files and Arch/Struct/MEP?
