Is there a way to represent the hour rating for a wall type graphically like we used to do in AutoCAD? ( -- -- -- for 2 hr) (- - - - for 1 hr ) etc as a fill inside the coarse setting for the wall.

I think you answered your own question. Most people i know have use the coarse scale fill pattern as the way of showing the fire ratings. Simply assign a cut material for each hour rating then assign it to the appropriate wall type and make sure you view detail level is set to coarse...

I understand your response but if you a brick veneer and want to illustrate the diagonal pattern for the brick it will need to be set at a medium view level. So taking your logic I decided to make a material metal studs one hour and assign a cut pattern, which worked. my question is how do you define the fill material to look like a dash dot line style and keep it in the center of the wall?

Hmm, as you can see this post is nearly 3 years old so things have a changed a little.

For starters I'd now use filters to do this...  Its still a bit of a shortfall of Revit.

I've attached the drafting hatch patterns which i grabbed from this post: http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=45869

HTH.

This sounds EXACTLY what I'm lookin for...BUT, do you have a more step by step approach to the instructions for us less than expert Revit users?  Sincerely appreciated!

1.  Create new drafting fill patterns in your project using the hatch patterns provided.  Settings-->Fill Patterns-->Drafting-->New-->Custom-->Import-->Select hatch Pattern and scale.

2. Select your wall type and go to its properties-->Edit/New

3.  There is a field for coarse scale fill pattern, set it to use your newly created fill pattern.

That's all there is to it.

Thanks Mr Spot... I guess I got hung up on the previous post when you refered to filters.    I haven't used filters and know little about them.  So, I did what you suggested but instead of finding a "field for course scale fill pattern", I just changed the "Cut Pattern" under the Appearence Tab of the metal stud material in the wall construction.  This produced greyed out area on all walls in the plan...not just to the one I modified.  So, realizing that it was reading the "stud layer" I created a new Material called "Metal Stud - 2 hr." to use in the construction of my wall.  Again, still the grey accurender defaut color appeared in plan.  I'm afraid I missed a critical place to enter the new hatch pattern.  (BTW, does it matter that I saved the pattern to my own Revit Library and not the Imerial one that comes with Revit?  Any further advice is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!  **O.K. I've found the "Course Scale Fill Pattern" and set it to the fill pattern, but still greyed walls.  What did I mess up??

It seems as though one can signify a wall with a graphical rating three ways

  1. Manually drawn:  Create a thick linetype and draw detail lines over each wall.  This is ok for small jobs, but bad for mid/large jobs.
  2. Wall Type:  Each wall type in the project must be modified to what "TesterSH" said above.  Not bad especially if you tend to use the same wall type for your jobs.
  3. Filter:  Mr. Spot mentioned using filters above.  This method is especially usefull in Revit 2008, because no matter what wall types are used in any project changes can be made globally in a flash.  Filters can be made and applied quickly.

Ok, So I'm missing two obvious points here. I get how to create a filter, but its not doing what I'd think it would (select everything called '2 Hour' Under the fire rated parameter.)

and Two, I've got the fill pattern but what can I do to make it align with the direction of the wall. Looks great on horizontal walls, just forget anything that turns or is vertical.

Thanks Mr. Spot for the hatch files and step by step directions.

Two follow-up questions:

Is there a way to make the hatch pattern show up in medium or fine setting?

The post was from 2007, is there a different/easier/better way to do this in the newer versions?

I'm newish to Revit, using version 2009 with an old slow computer.

In the last few months this forum has been a great help.  Thanks everyone.

use the filter method, it will show up in all detail levels, but it starts to do intersting things as you approach fine quality.  Also remember, you are able to show your walls as course in a medium to fine detail via graphic overrides.

As the filter gets to fine, I've noticed that it poches some but not all of the wall.  Good luck.

Mr. Spot,

I can only get the fill pattern to work in the right "direction" with element on Course view.  Why won't it work in Medium or fine? I am using a Filter and setting the cut pattern to the 1 Hour pattern you posted above.

Thanks
