Wondering if there are any built in short cuts to text in revit similar to Autocad to get particular symbols in the text, as in: Plus/Minus, Diameter,CL, PL, degrees etc...
THanks

To get special ASCII characters in REVIT just hold down the ALT key while typing the numeric code for the key from your keypad. ie: degree º (ALT 167) diameter Ø (ALT 0216) etc....

That is great information. Typing dia. is too long winded. What about m2 to get the 2 to read right.

The ALT-#### method works great for symbols (degree, diameter, etc..) Does anyone know if there is a way for centerline, property line, or angle?? Seems these are more graphic than they are text. I want to put them in my abbreviations list that is a schedule.

I know this thread is old, but this is what I am looking for. does anyone have a list of what comes with revit structure 2010. you would thinkit would. I really need the PL (plate), CL (centerline), L angle), +- (plus/minus).

Plus/Minus is Alt 241. The others are more graphic in nature and cannot be made as a special character. Rather than keep them in my abbreviationslist, I moved thingslike property line, centerline, etc.... to the symbols legend. An old thread never hurts cause I've spent 2 years trying to figure out the best way!!

wish I could help you but I am still looking. Seems each font varies with what they offer as characters.

Just google ascii character map http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII http://www.danshort.com/ASCIImap/ http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS242&q=ascii+character+map&aq=2&oq=ASCII&aqi=g10 Also go to images of the google search as well as web. Of course there is wikipedia which knows just about anything you need to know.

Now I know I am going to sound stupid - and I looked thru this, but how do I type those in to get the character. Hold down the alt key while typing the number?

I think I figured it out - if it says keystroke down at the bottom right of the character map then I can type in a short cut, but if it doesn't then I can't. I guess the U+2104 for CL in the font simplex doesn't really mean anything I can use, I still have to copy and paste the symbol.

maybe I should start a new thread for this, I've always copy-paste ASCII characters, the problem is when I hold alt, type numbers, a new project file opens when I hit the first number, probably caused by customized shortcuts?

If you are going to use the ALT codes, you have to hold the ALT key down and use the separate numeric keyboard. The keys above the letters on you keyboard will not work. A solution I use is to develop a drafting view in your template that has the common special characters already placed so the user can go to the view and copy/paste. To get the Windows Character Map, simply go tp Start>Run then type in charmap. Do this in Windows, not Revit. Revit simply uses Windows True Type fonts like any other Windows program.
