Working in Revit 2015.

When I open my local Revit file I get an error message :

Can't obtain permission to edit the element: The Central Model is inaccessible.  You can check out worksets at risk, but consider carefully!  (I love the ! Autodesk puts in to emphisize the severity of the risk you are considering)

If I expand the warning I see it is a "Data Storage Elements" and I get the id #

I cancel out of the error message and continue working as normal.  This has been going on for some time and so I am pretty sure that I am not running that great of a risk by continuing working.

Anyways, I locate the item by its id # and the only information I can get from the properties menu under Identity Data is that it says the Workset is Data Storage Elements.  I don't get it since there isn't a Data Storage Elements Workset in the project, either my file or the Central File.  Is it telling me it is in the Data Storage Elements Workset or that it is the Data Storage Element Workset.  Visually when I isolate the selected element I don't see anything in the model.

So I hit delete and away it goes, problem solved...right...wrong.  While it is deleted from what I can tell (id # search shows it is no longer in the project) the next time I open my local file another one is created.  It is different in that it has a different id # but other than that, it appears to be the same.  This problem persists even though I have made both new local and central files since the problem started.  Nobody else working on the project seems to have this problem either.

It doesn't appear that this error is as critical as the error warning makes it out to be !!! but it is anoying and it would be nice to know what is going on.  It would be appreciated if anybody had an insight as to what is going on here.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what that error is.  Could it be related to this?

I started to read this article and quickly realized it goes way over my head.  My first reaction is no, it is not related.  I, nor anybody in my office has gotten into the Revit API.  Plus (without really knowing what I am talking about) I don’t see how creating a Schema-based data structure and attaching it to an element would cause a syncing issue even after creating a new local file.  I don’t see how this is related to me being able to select something (data storage element…Workset?) delete it, and have it created a new.  With that said, it does not happen every time, just sporadically.

Another strange behavior I have noticed that may or may not be related is that on two occasions, Revit has by its own accord, taken it upon itself to create a copy of the file I am working on in my “My Documents” folder.

The first time I noticed it, I just thought it as odd since the file name included my email address (weird) which is not in our naming convention and was saved in a location I don’t save files.  I wasn’t using this file, didn’t know how it got there, so I just deleted it.  The second time I caught Revit it in the act.  I opened up the central file to save it as a detached from central file to send to our consultants.  I forgot to check the box to detach from central when I opened it, so I closed it without saving (relinquishing all items).  When I went to open up the file again, I noticed the file with my email address in the name (I had already deleted the first one some time ago) as the most recent file used in the Revit start screen (or whatever it is called).  Again Revit had created this file in my “My Documents” folder.  I have also noticed a 3D view created with my email as the naming convention where usually it would be my login name.  Not sure if this was created when it created the weird file.

Again, not sure if this could be related or not, but it is definitely weird.

I think you may have other issues - If there was a file created with your email address as a name, then you somehow logged into Revit using that name.  Your Revit username is fount under the Revit R dropdown / options.

Well that explains the username change.  It is using my Autodesk 360 account as a user name which I logged into some time ago.  So that is why it is using my email address instaed of my login name.  Not sure if it explains why Revit decided to save a file in my "Documents" folder though (sorry, probaby not the "My Documents" folder I originally stated).  I do see that this is the "Default path for user files" listed under R/Options/File Locations.  Not sure if it is some sort of default temporary file that for some reason Revit is not getting rid of.

RockFish,

Have you found any info about the "Data Storage Elements"? We are having the same issue as well. I'm thinking it could be an add-on that we have installed, but I have no way of tracking that down. It appears to be happening in many 2014 projects as well as 2015 projects.

You can simply hit cancel and go about your business with apparently no consequences. I'm not sure what is checking this out, but it is somewhat frustrating/annoying.

Anyone else running into this? Should we compare add-ins?

Thanks for any info!

I am still having the issue occasionally and haven’t found a solution.  So far though it is only on one project of mine.  As far as I know, I am the only one in our office having this issue but I am also the only one that really explores the advantages of add-ins.  Add-ins I have include:

RevitWorks – Door Factory LITE

Revitonic – Purge Linetypes

Hyder Conulting – myShortcut

Cadro Pty LTD – Hatchkit Add-in and Beta Trial thingy

Coins – Section Box

I’ve got one that says BIM 360 on the bottom that has buttons to ‘Glue’, Clash Pinpoint’, & Equipment Properties, that I can’t figure out what it is or how to uninstall it.

BIM 42 – Align

Some CASE Add-ins and resellers add in (IMAGINiT Utilities).

If it was an Add-In I would guess it might be Align, BIM 360, myShortcuts or Purge Linetypes.

Let me know if you are using any of these.

We actually have none of these installed. I believe the BIM 360 is an Autodesk add-in, I believe it is installed with the software, but can be left out when you create a deploy (if I remember correctly).

Here's our list:

2014 Revit:

CSC Integration, STL Exporter, Navisworks 2014 & Navisworks Switchback 2014, Autodesk Revit Extensions, Space Naming Utility, Worksharing Monitor

2015 Revit:

Space Naming Utility, Worksharing Monitor, Site Designer Tools (R2 update)

Nothing shared. It seemed to have cropped up after we installed 2015, but I can't really pinpoint a date/time.

Come to think of it, it might have shown up with the R2 update to 2015...

I am pretty sure I was having this issue before the R2 update.

One more add-in that we installed but then later removed was the "CTC Project Suite 2015". Wondering if this could be causing issues.

I never installed that add-in.  I did post this issue to Autodesk's forums and got an email that they were opening a case on it.

I will keep you posted if anything comes of that.

As an update to any future views, please follow the other forum post I shared the link to above.  As a recap though we were able to stop the problem by removing the Light Anaysis add-in (or at least moving its folder to a different location so Revit could not find it).

We see problems here too with add-ins that we can't get rid of in project files.  Autodesk needs to set some better standards for these so that they can be removed.

Thanks Rockfish for updating this post with the "solution".

Funny thing about this add-in is that it was created by Autodesk. I agree that some kind of standard should be set in place, but Autodesk themselves should be able to write an add-in and get it right. Right?
