I understand that removing the linked file will delete it essentially, but was wondering what unloading it will do. we have a structural model in our revit architecture model [2011 version], and our file size is pretty big right now [225mb], and i've been having memory issues. It has caused several crashes and lost work, what with revit telling me my file was "no longer compatible with the central file" and i'd have to get a new one because it can't reconcile the differences or whatever. That message comes up when i'm trying to save to central. i was thinking maybe this could help free up some memory?

Unloading a link only removes that information from the project temporarily.
We only link other files in their own worksets. By doing that, you have the option of using reduced worksets when opening a large file. In essence, if you don't load a workset that has a linked file in it, you don't load the link.
By using the above process while working in Revit 2008 on a 4gig, 32 bit machine, we were able to do a 230 meg architectural project which also had linked structural, site and mechanical files. Still a lot of juggling but it worked.

Thanks for the quick response!
I think we just brought the revit structural model into our active workset, with no regard to putting it on a different one. when we get the newest updated structural model, we'll make a new workset and load it into that one correct?
So if we open the project, and don't load the workset with the linked model in, it'll use less memory, but will it show taht information or no?

You don't need to wait. Simply create the workset (make sure to set if you want it visible in all views) then click on the linked model and change its workset. Then when you get your new model, simply use the reload from option to pick up the new model.
DON'T REMOVE AND RELINK UPDATED MODELS NO MATTER WHAT THEIR NAME. Just use the reload from... and you can set the new path if need be.
Note: In addition to using a reduced workset load, you can unload / load worksets at any time while working.

how to load and unload workset.
is it Hide option?
or unchecking visible in all views?
principle: loading and unloading control memory and get control over file size.
please explain how to load or unload a workset

Your HELP is something you should learn to use. Revit's help is much better than other programs. Just use single word searches. In this case, I searched workset and you get this. Read : To open worksets from the Worksets dialog.

i was working in a file, when there came an issue with IT, and username corruption, our IT engineer formatted PC and changed my username.
it is about 2 months now. i started working by taking new local copy of central file. but now i was trying to delete unnecessary views to reduce file size, it tells not possible until my old username has to save file and to relinquish.
what i can do now?

The best answer is to open the file detached and create a new central.
But you raise a question that often comes up for different reasons. Sometimes the above process just can't be done. Maybe the user was out of the office because of an illness and owned some worksets. You don't want everyone doing this...only I did it typically in my office. You can start Revit and change your username to the problem name. Now you can open the file and save to central with "relinquish all mine." Next AND YOU MUST DO THIS - you close Revit, open Revit then change your username back to yours and you are ready to go.
ALWAYS make sure the offending user knows what happened so thsy don't try to save to central and possibly mess things up.

I remember your reply for one of my questions, if i link cad file, i must have a seperate workset for each cad file for better control.
is it same for linking Revit files? liniked file is always open for coordination, then it affects memory and speed

Usually always better to link any file in a seperate workset. We have seperate ones for each discipline that is linked in....site, MEP, structural and sometimes FP.

A little tip. You can change your username for revit under options > username. You can change it to anything or another users name and then relinquish anything they might be controlling and then change back to your username and you will be good to go. For this to work correctly you have to do this change before you open your project.
Open revit. change username. open project. relinquish. save and close project. change username back. open project again.

Hi
i was trying to print from my revit, more than one sheet, in selected sheet option.
i slected 3 sheets, but it is not printing. but when i select each sheet, then it is printing.
why i cant select multiple sheets at one go.?
please advise
