I'm using 2011 and I'm having issues with my wall joins.  I have worked on a floor plan over the past few months and have altered wall joins to show the new construction abutting the existing construction in the plan view.  After having developed the model a bit more and adding new views (at different scales), design options, etc., when I try to manipulate the wall joins in any newer view, my 'join options' are now grayed out and uneditable.  The earlier views still allow me to edit the wall joins, so I'm not quite sure what setting would limit my ability on the newer ones.

I realize I could 'disallow join' but that would be tedious and I would prefer the wall join tool to work.  Also, is there a way to change new-to-existing wall join conditions universally (and set them to 'not clean joint') or is that asking too much from the software?  Thanks in advance!

Wall joins are not view dependent so if you set them in one plan, they will be the same at any scale.

If you have some walls that have edited profiles, they will have problems with join conditions if they are different on different levels.  I like the split these walls at the floor lines rather than using wall sketches.

WW,

I'm not calling you a liar, but I'm not sure why this is the case here.  Please see the attached images.  The two plan views are at different scales and have differing wall join conditions.  In fact, I just clicked on a third plan view that shows the wall joins correctly (with the color scheme) but incorrect scale.

Also, I AM able to alter the joins of some portions of the plan, but not others.  I have tried checking out all the worksets, setting the work plane to the respective levels, etc., but still no dice.

I just did a test project with a curved wall - existing phase, then added perpindicular and angled intersecting walls - new phase, and then created several new plan views at various scales.  In all instances, my walls cleaned up correctly with no modification required.

My conclussion is that you are doing something you have not told us.

Are you using design options?

Is the curved wall a wall by face form a mass?

I am using design options but all of the walls are a part of the main model and are not a part of any option.  The wall is just a standard wall that was curved rather than straight - does this answer your questions?  I cannot imagine what other information I could be missing that might be pertinent.  Well, actually, there is a plan region around that portion of the model which I posted.  Could that affect how the joins are displayed?  If so, is there another way around it?

Below is my test project with 4 different scale plan views.  As you can see, they all clean up correctly.  BTW - I am using the default cleanup and I changed nothing.  No editing required.

Are you sure you don't have multiple walls in the same place?  I notice in the room to the right, I see what appears to be two different walls below the toilets.  One wall slightly above the other.  Multiple walls in the same place could cause the issues you are seeing.  Delete one of the walls that doesn't clean up and see if there is still a wall there that does clean up.

There are not walls on top of one another.  The issue of wall joins is not limited to the curved wall.  Given my level of frustration with what can and cannot clean up in this model, I would just normally do the work-around of disallowing joing, but then that method only works with walls that meet at 90 degrees.

Does it have anything to do with any of worksets?  I have played with all worksets, checked them all out, and there does not seem to be any consistentcy between what will and what will not be editable, though I've found more success with interior wall joins.  Thank you for your efforts thus far.

Without seeing at least a portion of the file, the only other problem I can think of is a corrupt program or file.

This is not standard Revit behavior.  As I have shown these walls normally cleanup without any modification at all.  View scale has nothing to do with this.  Multiple views have nothing to do with this.  Plan regions should not affect it... You can delete the plan region and see what happens.

My only other suggestions are to:  Copy/paste a few of these walls to a new file in one operation and see what happens.  Check it out on another computer if you can.

BTW - If you have over-ridden the join, you can reset to default for the view.

I was wrong, wall joins are a view property.  From the HELP:>  Sets the default behavior for cleaning wall joins. If you set this property to Clean All Wall Joins, then Revit Architecture automatically cleans all wall joins. If you set this property to Clean Same Type Wall Joins, Revit Architecture only cleans wall joins of the same wall type. If you join different wall types, Revit Architecture does not clean them. You can override this setting using the Edit Wall Joins tool. <<  But I have never changed this setting and if you have, I don't know how you did it.

Never too old to learn.  I have never changed the default wall joins setting.... don't know when or why I would.

To change - you can not be in a sheet version of a view.  You must be in the view itself, then this setting will be available.

Thanks, but even that is not editable for me, at least not when it matters.  It seems that for the plan views with color schemes that I have set up to be placed onto sheets for final print, there is not the ability to change the wall join display, while with views that are either site plans, roof plans or views of plans that are for the sole purpose of working (and not printing), I am able to edit those universally.

I tried to turn off the color schemes, I compared the view properties, deleted plan regions and have just not been able to track down what is making the join tool unavailable in the views that I need them.

Thank you for letting me know about the help section.  I obviously tried there initially, but was not originally able to find any info.  I have since found more and am exploring it a bit further.  If I'm able to track down the element(s) that is/are causing the tool to be grayed-out, I will let you (all) know.

I'm interested in this problem - can you post a screen shot of what you mean by the join option being greyed out and also show the problem area?

Hi Badkube,

WW is trying to help me on this one as well on another thread. Here is what i posted there:

"first image: the join i edited before in red (don't clean join), that is how i want it to be. the problem is, i can no longer edit it, as indicated in the upper left corner with the grayed out configuration options.

second image: same join in red, other view, different join configuration. this view i made after making the central file, and when i try to edit the join so it does not clean join the options are grayed out, as indicated in red.

third image: the join that i am still able to edit (middle one), along with some i cant (right and left). you can notice the configurations are not grayed out and open to be edited."

also:

" for the box to close properly on the openings, i had to put the white (hollow) part as the core layer and the brick (the diagonal hatch) as an outer layer, that's why the core of the other wall went inside like that. Since there is an option to edit the wall join, i didn't think it would be problematic to do it like that. Then the option suddenly stopped working and now i don't know what to do."

Thanks for the reply!

As I said earlier in this thread, I had never messed with the view's join wall settings.  I have now but I am confused as to why it works like it does and when I would change it.

In the view settings while under coarse view, you have two options

  1. Clean all wall joins
  2. Clean same type wall joins

I tried both of these and I see no changes in my views.

Now change the view to medium or fine and this setting automatically reverts to clean all wall joins.  << So why use it?

As far as why the join option is grey, this seems to occury when there is only one option.

Hi WW,

the thing is, you have the option to do it for each join with the join edit tool. There are three options: clean join, don't clean join and use view settings.

those were open to me before and suddenly they closed up, after making the central file.
