Hi there This is a simple one, how to tag roof component like gutter, soffit as soffit and soffit as ridge tile? nirim

You will not find a stock tag for these items but you should be able to create them. The tag will have to read the category of the family. How can a soffit be a ridge tile?

Hi there WWHub Thanks for the replay, i couldn’t answer earlier however I use a profile (for the soffit) resemble ridge tile profile and by choosing the ridge line REVIT automatically place the “soffit” on the ridge (see attached profile). I have created roof tag but it doesn’t let me tag the soffit or the gutter. nirim

Tags can only read what you tell them to read when you design the tag. How can a roof tag read this profile? How does it know to read this profile since it is a "roof" tag? How can a roof tag read a gutter? As I said earlier, a tag has to be set to look at a family and then read a parameter in the family. Door tags look at door families and they read the parmeter "Mark" in that placed instance. In this case, you will want to use a multi-category tag and you will need to assign a shared parameter in the family that the tag will read. I suggest you read up on tags.

Hi there WWHub I think I miss led you, what I meant is fascia and not soffit. i.e. I use ‘Roof-Fascia’ with the earlier mentioned profile to place ridge tiles on the roof. nirim

Doesn't matter - same rules apply. BTW - If this profie is supposed to be a facia, then it should be assigned to that category in the family. The family you postes is GENERIC.

WWHub That fine, I changed the category of the profile to be fascia and I am in the process of assign shared parameter to the tag. If I understand you correctly, multi category tag supposed to recognize the various elements of the roof (gutter, soffit and fascia) and tag them correctly. nirim

My first instinks were as WW indicated and I tried using a shared parameter but cannot seem to get that shared parameter to propegate through the ridge tile profile family to the fascia / ridge tile in the project. So I just added a Keynote Value as a Type property to the Fascia family (which uses the ridge tile profile) and then used a regular 'Keynote tag' and it worked. See attachment.

I think it would have to be a 'shared parameter' thing and I discovered a fews things trying to make this work. a) Profile families will not allow shared parameters which was news to me. b) You can create the shared parameter and then assign it as a Project Parameter using the Category 'Fascia'. (makes you say Aha, I got it) ! c) The big show stopper is I can't seem to tag a fascia no matter what. Even a regular tag. When you use any of the Tagging tools and hover over a fascia nothing highlights. Ussualy it highlights, then you click and at the very least it asks you to 'load a tag'. So my research tells me you simply cannot tag a fascia no matter what. Any one else have input?

Daryl, This information is good. Then I guess I might add an IDF family (Invisible Detail Family) that has my shared parameter needed to be tagged. NOT A PRETTY SOLUTION - but something that could also schedule.

nirim- i believe there is a way to do what you want to do.. so far we have a conclusion that this cannot be done no matter what.. i think i know how to do it but i need to put an explanation together so i don't post anything incorrectly.. in the meantime- we have over 200 ambitious revit students- with that number rising rapidly- who are reading this thread that may have discoverd a solution themselves- and maybe they will post it before i have my solution ready.. so don't go too far away..

nirim- here is something you might try: 1. a generic annotation with a label.. 2. enter the designation of the fascia type and in the keynote parameter then use annotate > keynote > element.. 3. use keynote > user > select one designation from the list.. See image..
