could someone please help me understand how to make these fake gable ends look better. the Architect has a lot of them and as you can see when i create them, they extend through the real roof. i saw that somebody suggested using ref lines to cut the roof. i'm not really clear on how to do that. any help you could give to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. thank you by the way this is in architectural 2010

use roof by extrusion and select the face of the ref. roof as your plane to extend to. You might have to use cut/join geometry. That's what's on top of my head now but I could be wrong too. Let me know your progress.

Ya... join/unjoin roof is the correct way to do it just like Typhoon said. or you can also use slope arrow. Ignore my previous post...I was thinking CAD. lol

type in "gable roof" in Revit help... it will show you how to do it. HELP in Revit is one the very good resources for information if you get stuck in something - you should try it.

yes they have me working on something else the rest of the day anyway. i will be trying this again at home tonight. i looked at the tutorial in revit help. the only thing that i might have problems with are the roof sections that are under other roof sections. like the one to the bottom right in the photo that i included.

thank you for the video. however it still isn't working for me. i don't know if i have a setting wrong, because when i made the extruded roof following along with you, my roof looks different. here is a screenshot. and i still can't get it to join/unjoin. i even tried using the pull handles to make sure it was only on the south side of the building. still no luck.

I think I know the problem.... you joined all the roofs already... you might need to unjoined them and use the join/unjoin tool....once you do that, you can drag by handle one the "section" (the one going thru the roof) and drag it towers the "profile" (the V shaped) then.... select join/unjoin tool and select one segment of the "V" shape profile (make sure you select the segment you are going to attach to the main roof... then, select the main roof you going to attach to. That should work, I tried it myself. Note: Once you select the join/unjoin roof tool.... just follow the prompt on the lower left corner for instructions.

thanks for all the help everyone. with the ideas that you gave me and the tutorial for 4 sided gable roof in revit, i was able to get it done. i used roof by footprint as before. but instead of making a rectangle for the roof shape, i used a triagle. then instead of setting the sides as slope defining, i used slope arrows on the front edge, that used the 6/12 slope i needed. and the attached file shows the problem is now resolved.
