I've been attempting to use the sweep function to create a cornice around the top of a building (and other things), however the finished product ends up transparent with no shadows cast (see image). Suggestions?

Are you doing it as a mass? If so, rather create the component in a category, such as walls.

Hmm. I'm using the host sweep function under the modeling tab. Is there a way to do it as a wall?

If you go into the sweep properties you can set the material there.

I had to use a Mass to get the curved roof you see in the image, which was doing the same thing.

I would have created the curved roof as a roof and not a mass. You can model it in the same way that you did the mass. Create an in-place component and give it the roof category.

If I right click and go into element properties, I get this without the ability to change materials.

Go to the element properties and click on 'edit type'.

OK, this confirms that it was created as a mass and not a hosted sweep. Do it as a wall hosted sweep, or as an in-place family in the wall category. You can change the appearance of the default mass material in the material settings, but I would not use a mass for this.

OK.. The wall sweep and wall reveal are grayed out in plan view. The are accessible in 3D view, but I'm not given the option to create a profile. If I apply it using the default profile (rectangular profile), it seems like I can then modify the profile, but I guess I need to create and save a profile somewhere.

There are two options. A wall hosted sweep as you suggest requires a profile to be loaded. You need to create that first and then load it into the project (use the Profile hosted template). The second option, which you can do in a plan view is to create a component in place, using the wall category, define the path and draw the profile that you want.
