I'm sure this has been discussed, but i can't find any threads that pertain...I'm trying to come up with the best way of adding text to my building sections, wall sections, and details - either by Tagging or Keynoting. I want the ability to make a change within one view and know that it has made that change globally, which is why I refuse to use text in any of these views. Keynotes can become combursome in that you will have a text file with potentially hundreds (or more) of notes to sift through to find the right one. I do see benefits in keynoting the Element as well as Keynoting the Material, however i notice more times than not I'm using Keynote User - which to me seems a bit dangerous. Tagging has its own issues, especially when you start to consider schedules - i.e. Tag the element's Type Mark in section and setting up a schedule that's sorted by type mark - change one and you change both....either intentionally or inadvertently.... I'm curious how other firms/users have dealt with this issue.

I still like Keynotes by Material. I have custom keynote.txt files that I use. It only takes a few jobs to get all the notes that you use and it is easy to add to. I would usually just delete the entire keynote text and save it off with a new name. The editing is easy. "1"tab)"note", "2"tab)"note" ..Easy..

I guess my question really is when do you use keynote material (or keynotes in general), when do you use tag (either element or material), etc.? Do you just use Keynotes on these drawings and not tags - and do you consistantly use the same keynote from Building Section to Wall Section to Detail? My problem is that i have a smattering of keynotes (by element, material, and user) as well as multiple tags - all on the same wall section. I'm building a template file and am trying to plan for new Revit users to be able to consistantly know exactly what to use when and where, while still having the peace of mind that updates are being made to all pertenant drawings - and they're only made once (rather than updating text notes everywhere)... Are Keynotes throughout the best way to go? Tags concern me simply because of the schedules i have set. Does that better explain my situation/question?

I understand what you are looking for. I don't use a Keynote schedule. I will just use Keynote Material. By using the material keynote you can assign the keynote as part of your material library. See image. If you make it a "standard" to use the Material Tag then any time a material changes you will see it everywhere. Now if you want a schedule or "legend" of the keynotes that will be harder. The issue is how to number the notes. "By Sheet" or "By Keynote". It really depends on what you are looking for. I don't use the keynote legend because I use the Keynote Tag:Keynote Text. I can see how that would work well for a less-detailed view such as a building section and even a wall section (something around 1/4" or 1/2" scale), but what happens when you get into a detailed view (1" scale and up)? For instance: on a section I want to call out the foundation wall, the vertical and horizontal rebar within the wall (which are currently drawn as Detail Lines), the gravel backfill (which is currently drawn as a filled region), weatherproofing membrane on the wall, & 1" Insulation. I can see how i would be able to create a Material Keynote for the wall and (if i build the insulation onto the wall) the 1" insulation - but how would you treat the other notes, and how do you maintain consistancy? Typically i would use Keynote User (and use the Keynote Tag: Keynote Text) to define items that cannot accept Type Parameter, such as Detail lines and Filled Regions....however, these still need to be assigned or associated with some object (i.e. the foundation wall). So what is your standard practice for annotating a detailed view that is calling out items that truly aren't modeled, or that need multiple notations? Sorry for the length....

You are correct. I think there are still items that you can't keynote. Gravel back fill for example. I make it standard to keynote all that can be. I don't usually have an issue with "detail" items changing in the project. As far as vapor barrier you can keynote that even with a 0" thickness. Insulation is also an issue when it is in a frame wall. The work around is to keynote the wall in such a way that it lists the construction you can't note. 2x4's @ 16" O.C. W/ R-13 BATT INSUL. Same could be used for the Rebar. 12" P.CONC. FOUNDATION WALL W/ #5 BARS 12" O.C. VERTICALLY. The standard notes like "gravel back fill" can be made as Annotation Symbols so if you change 1 you change them all. I use a combination of both and try to get the keynotes to do as much as possible.

That's good advice - Thank you. What is your take on using Tags? I'm tempted to use tags to call out certain things like structural members, or items that I know I'm not going to schedule (which is potentially a very dumb thought....). Do you restrict yourself to only tag something that needs to be referenced to/from a schedule (i.e. a window, door, etc.)?

Is there some way to tag or keynote an entire wall type at once? I want to be able to have a muli-line block of text on my wall sections for each wall type instead of each material having its own note and arrow. The closest I have come is making text a group.....however the leader is grouped as well and doesn't work at the same position in every wall section. I'm tired of spendin an hour changing one word in 100 different places. Any help is much appreciated!

First - why are you not using a wall types schedule? You seem to indicate this is a problem - I don't know what that could be. Then a simple wall tag will indicate the type of wall that is noted on a wall types schedule. If other users screw this up then they should be gone. Second - Could you use a keynote for the whole wall - sure can... Finally - organizing keynotes... You can always add lines in your keynote file that seperate it into sections so that you can find things.

Everywhere I have ever worked it was prefered that a wall section is fully noted out with text and not tags that that direct you to another sheet. I asked the question hoping for a helpful response. Instead, I am told I am an idiot for not using a wall types schedule. Thank you Mr. Site Moderator.

I have been trying to acomplish the same thing as yourself and the best solution I've found when creating a full wall description with is to create a seperate revit file with all your descriptions and construction notes ect. done with the text tool; than with that rvt file open you can copy the txt to clip board and and paste your canned descriptions or whatever in to your drawing from the modify tab.

As per my previous post i just discovered that one cannot copy from say an elevation view of one project to a sheet of another. the bottom line: sheet to sheet or everying else to anything else

What johnsonara seemed to miss (because he took offense so quickly) and you did not see either was that you can use a keynote for this. Keynotes can be assigned by element, by material or by user. In this case, the keynote is assigned by element. In your views, you have the option of keynoting by text or number. You would want to keynote by text.
