I just finished rendering an exterior view and the materials that we applied are gray. The proper colors and textures show up in the shaded view before rendering, however they're gone after the view is rendered. The doors and some interior walls visible through windows are showing proper materials. It looks as though one of the buildings has it's materials, but it's not the important one of course, and I can't find any discrepency within the file settings nor view settings to account for it. And I'd hate to have to wait another 1.5 hours for a draft render to find out something isn't right. Using Revit 2008, with 5 building models linked into a site plan, added trees and plantings. Thanks, Gyv

Im having a similar problem, revit 2010. I have assigned all the proper materials and colors but when rendered, all the building materials although the right color, are smooth, any suggestions? This is mainly the problem with the standing seam metal roof and horizontal siding.Edited on: Fri, Feb 12, 2010 at 5:18:56 PM

Are you talking about materials you assign to walls, roofs and so one OR about families (components) you insert into the project?

I'm talking about materials assigned to walls through 'edit assembly' by adding an exterior and interior finish. I'm a new user so if this is not the correct way to assign a texture please let me know!

Do you have the project set up with phasing? I just noticed that if objects are not in the current "phase" they will render with a generic grey material.

The project does have phasing but it all appears to be correct, it renders the correct color just without texture, doors appear to have wood grain but no texture, siding is the correct color but looks smooth as if it were stucco ....

For materials that have depth to them, you have to have the right material assigned and it will have an associated bump file that gives the material its "depth". So - what did you use for these materials "standing seam" and "siding" ? Where did you get them?

yes, they were in my default library, I haven't figured out how to download additional textures yet, so I'm just working with the basic revit library.

If you are rendering up - close images, don't expect realistic textures. Why don't you post an image so we can see?

These were just quick renderings to make sure everything was rendering as intended...

From that distance, you will not see much texture from those materaials.

I tried a few closer up renderings and also had no texture, but at least if it wont show up from the far shots I don't need to worry about it right now... thanks everyone for all your help!

Perhaps your problem is different, but you might check that you have defined the Render Appearance of your materials, and not just the shading color. In the Materials settings, there should be 4 tabs: (Graphics), (Render Apppearance), (Identity), & (Physical). The model should render according to what you have assigned in the second tab (Render Appearance). If you have only assigned a shading color according to the first tab (Graphics), your results in a render would be grey by default. There is a checkbox in the (Graphics) tab "Use Render Appearance for Shading" If you put a check in this box, the shading preview should match your rendering assignment in (Render Apppearance). I hope this helps.
