Revit 2016 file, when I go to open it says "failed to open document". It was a non-workshare file. The only additional bit of information that is different is that previously the user copied the file so that there would be an "existing" and "proposed" project files for the existing building and proposed construction. I turned the "proposed" project into a central file and then the "existing" file failed to open - but there was the option to detach from central. Does a copy of a non-workshared file remain somehow connected so that at a later date they would be referencing the same central file? This makes no sense to me.

It appears that you do not fully understand worksharing so you need to be very careful.

Copying a central file to a new location can be done but the new file is not a central.  To use this file, you would need to open it detached then if you preserved worksets, you can choose to save it as a new central.

We copy centrals, without their backup folder, only as a backup or to place on our FTP.  If you want a new central, open the central and do a save as and choose the option to make this file a central after saving.
