Hi my name is Karen I have been using Revit (self taught) for a couple years now. I am SO GREEN!
I am an interior designer and right now I am using the program to draw simple furnishings,
creating seperate families, and schedules. I need help!
I need to know if after creating a family, (say cabinet) Can I make a
schedule that will show me how much lumber I used in the cabinet?
Any feedback?
Thanks,
Karen

Yes, this can be done, but it is not set up out of the box. You will need to create shared parameters so the family's custom parameters will schedule in the project. You could set this up with different degrees of accuracy, depending on your needs. You could go so far as to create a parameter for each piece of wood being used, but I would recommend simplifying the calculations, e.g. estimating how much lumber is used per linear foot of cabinet or creating a formula based on LxWxH.

Thanks, as to createing a parameter for each piece of wood being used, sounds like just more labeling is that correct?

Yes, that's right, a W,D,& H for each piece of wood if you really wanted to estimate it down to the inch, but I really don't recommend doing it that way. You'd have a ton of parameters, and organizing them would be a nightmare. Architects and contractors do it by linear foot. I would recommend using the W, D, & H parameters that are already in the families.
UPDATE!, I jsut tested this, and the parameter "material volume" is set up out of the box. I would highly recommend doing it as a function of that parameter.
