I’ve been trialling Structural and have had some pretty impressive results – my 30 days are up now & I’ve hopefully done enough to convince the boss to purchase this fantastic product ! I’ve dabbled my fingers in Revit for some years, but its been a hard slog convincing this new employer.
So – the bigger picture - with Xsteel, Triforma and some <->ABS experience under my belt, my concerns are that the BIM vision is coming, but the message is somewhat hyped until we all start working together.
Imagine the days when we’re all using Revit & passing models back & forth. How would that REALLY work?
eg I receive an ‘architectural’ rvt model – how do I freeze out any ‘structure’ my arty colleague has done and replace it with a hideously over designed solution ;-)
Seriously, though – and please don’t dwell on these questions, as only real trials will convince me….
Would I flesh out ‘their’ concepts at an early stage? And build on the progressive issues of the model over time? or would they be kind enough to do the structure, for me to refine & size. How would I convey an ‘approximate design’ (eg sketch) model representative of a ½ hr work against a full blown design if I’m not issuing drgs? what if ‘their’ model was done with worksets? would I be locked out? Would that be a good way of solving all the stuff that follows ? what if their entire 6 month model/drg process was based on my ½ hr sketch model, (telephones aside, would I need to tag/colour code/identify the approx things, so that all will be aware of change pending) Will I get ‘their’ sheets coming in on import? would that be an issue even? If so, will their drawings look correct (linetypes, line weights etc) How would I know? How would dwf assist this? Will pdf still be interrogated to make sure? And then, oh my word, the external levels change and the retaining wall needs dropping and when I resize it, it needs a larger stem, which is no prob I hear you say on the details, but I when I change it screws up all the lettable area drawings in their model at my end and they/me have no idea! Then, dare I delete elements of their model ? how would they know if I had? What if their fancy brick facing over the retaining wall plays up and then can’t attach to roof? Undo, undo on the phone to ask them to increase the stem, to sort out the roof, and I’ll be waiting there to import again to annotate the structural drawing with the correct size (its my PI) How would I be confident that all my structure is correct in their model? Will my families transfer correctly to them? How often would be swap models? Would this be via email or a server? When we have to issue 100 or so drawings this evening, will this be done from one pc? how good is the revision manager? when there are beam changes size 11th hour would it be safer to ensure all 100 drawings are reissued ? or should they still be manually inspected before issue? or would we issue the whole model file & a setup disc for the client in demo mode for them to print themselves ? …and then when Revit starts accepting IFC imports… my head might just explode !
Ok, sorry for the rant – but hopefully you see what’s keeping awake ! It’s not me really learning the use of the software, it’s the culture change across the industry that intrigues me.
Any thoughts would be welcome, but again I’m not looking for specific answers to the above, rather the ‘visionary’ experiences without the hype. If anyone wants to start a dialogue/trade outside the forum I’d be happy to give my email address.
[…In time I would like to realise a suggestion that will hopefully be well received. There are so many time zones on this forum we might just be able to exploit them….
Anyone want some structure?
Who’s got some architecture?
Anyone specialising in interior design ?
And what about landscape?
Who wants to play Client? Project manager ? Contractor ?
An estimator would be good too – initial take off vs final take off.
I could do some HVaC too in ABS for a dwg overlay too….]

that have to be one of the longest post... lol
i was wondering the same about structural working on my architectural model, the basic answer is that structure wont be able to change the arch model, it will have nothing to do with the arch model worksets. you just add your structure and check interference (which you could do in revit for a while now)
the BIM concept is a brave new world concept, but it won't work unless we all use the same software, i can't see all this happening any time soon this will raise some other issues like market control and monopoly, no competition in the market place just to name a few...
Revit for me the way it is, is a huge step forward anyway, we are going to have an interesting time ahead of us for sure!
You can talk to Mr Spot about BIM, he is doing his work for uni on it...
