Im wondering if there is a way to make the newer components compatible with my older version of revit?? Is there a way to convert the files to an older format?

2005 Revit????  I don't know what that is.

You can always bring a Revit element or project forward but nothing goes backward.

There isn't any REVIT 2005 only Revit 5, the Revit 2000 series start with Revit 2008 then 2009, 2010 and now 2011.

Show Alabaster's post to your school.  As he said, your school can get all the software for free ... but they need computers that can use that software.  That may be your problem. From 2009 and up, you should have 4Gig of memory on your system.  The last Revit product that worked well with less memory than that was 2008.
