I usaully create filters with different colors for each type of system. Then I just set the filter to read the COMMENTS property of all the families in the pipe catagory. Then in the view(s) I add the filters in the visibility / graphics dialog and then just type in the comments property the abbreviation for the system. See the attacched images for examples. ok, i have another question regarding filters for pipe types. do i really have to go into each and every pipe, and fitting, and add text to the comment line. for example Vent, or Storm. to make them different from Sanitary Drain?

No. If you go to the analyze tab, you cna place a colorfill based on certain properties of the pipes...then just add that colorfill to the desired views.

i must be missing something. in the analyze tab. the only color scheme that i can apply is the pipe size. and in section view, that is even blocked. i'm getting frustrated. if i use the filter set up for system type sanitary, and comment vent. then the sanitary overrides the vent and both are green, unless i uncheck the sanitary. then the drain is white. still not right. i'm pulling out my hair.

i know that what i want to do is possible, i just can't seem to be able to figure it out. on a totorial that i saw from autodesk au. they have somehow defined a pipe type for vent. and when they connect a pipe to the vent connection, it automatically changes to orange.

I know this thread is a few months old, but for anyone else out there refering to this I have a suggestion. Rather than use "Comments" in your filter, use "Type Comments" This will allow you to define the pipe type such as Cold Water and everything you draw that is defined as that will take on those properties. That will allow you to not have to select each item one by one. Also, if you have pipe that is already drawn that has no properties assigned to it yet you can use MA to match atributes similar to match properties in AutoCAD.
