I had problems with the family. But anyway a good starting point for me. The family did not emit enough light as indicated in the picture in my Setting.

I had problems with family too in Revit 2014. Light probably cannot pass through CUTS.Fixed by modifying the extrusions where light should be coming from. Instead of cut, I remade that part so it is a thin walled box with open bottom. So now light can come out from box.
