I have been charged with imnplimenting REVIT into our office as the sole document producing software...much to my pursuation. That being said I need to learn all of its technical aspects (right?) I have been doing much of my learning throught Mastering Revit Structure 2009 2010, however i cannot determine something that I thin should be simple, PLEASE HELP OR POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION IF YOU CAN. I am able to place framing along a sloped roof as noted in CHAPTER 7 of these books. But I have a few problems: 1. I cannot get members to offset from that plane after they are placed and keep them associated to my roof so that I can "flex" the model. (such as horizontal braces) 2. I cannot get nice pickpoints when in plan-view with a sloped plane set? Anything would help guys, Greg

My first suggestion is that each project be considered for Revit prior to executing the documentation in Revit. It really doesn't make sense to always do everything in Revit. Revit is great, but it should be recognized for what it is- a tool. It's not a silver bullet. If it makes sense to do something in AutoCAD, do it in AutoCAD. That being said. I don't usually use roofs in Revit Structure. I typically use floors for everything- including roofs. I don't have Mastering Revit, but it sounds like you want to move members off of a plane? I wouldn't advise this unless it's absolutely necessary. A good model should really not have elements not associated to planes. Are you speaking about horizontal or lateral braces? Finally, what do you mean by pickpoints in plan view with a sloped plane? Are you talking about creating a reference plane, and cutting a section parallel to that plane? Or, are you talking about creating a sloped slab, and trying to add points to that slab while in a plan view? What are you trying to achieve? Do you have a sketch or image you can attach to this thread?

Thanks for replying, To answer you question, these are for horizontal braces (but could be for anything you want to flex with the roof). The procedure I used is as follows: 1. Model roof (by the way, I have heard using floors is a good idea...any particular reasons?) 2. Cut a section through the roof. 3. Set the workplane with pick lines 4. Select the bottom of roof -this will promt me to choose a view to associate plane with...i chose my roof plan 5. Now I am in the PLAN but my workplane is set to the bottom of deck. I can place members that are attached and associated to the roof. If I change my roof slope, my members will also change slope. But I need the horizontal bracing and the nominal half chord depth (centered) 6. This would also be the case witha sloped joist roof I guess. I apreciate your time.

You should be able to change the z-offset value. See highlighted field in attached image.

Emgeeo, Thank for replying, that is ieactly what I have been unable to determine. Do you by any chance, know how I can keep my framing workpoints from moving when I change the slope of the roof? Thanks you again, Greg

If I undertand you... If your workpoints are not at the edge of the roof..... I think they will be moving.
